Early Childhood Assistants (ECAs) work under the guidance of Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) to provide developmentally appropriate care for children from infancy to age 12, supporting their physical, cognitive, emotional, and social growth. They assist ECEs in planning and implementing activities, supervising children to ensure safety, helping with feeding, diapering, and hygiene routines, maintaining a clean and organized environment, and fostering positive behavior and social skills among children.

Graduates of the NACC Early Childhood Assistant 2021 , who wish to continue their education, can enter the second year of Canadore College’s Early Childhood Education Diploma Program.

Academic Requirements
2. *Equivalent: Foreign credentials must be translated in English and assessed for Grade 12 equivalency by a recognized organization such as WES (World Education Service) OR
3. Mature student status may be granted to applicants who are over 19 years of age and pass a Superintendent approved qualifying test (Wonderlic SLE)
Non-Academic Requirements: English Language Proficiency: If English is not a student’s first language, they must provide proof of English competency. English Language Proficiency Requirements are ONE of the following:
- IELTS – Int’l English Language Testing Services – Minimum score of 5.5 with no subject test score lower than 5.5; or
- TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet based test (IBT) – Overall 80 with the minimum in each component: Reading 20; Listening 20; Speaking 20; Writing 20; or
- CAEL- Overall 60 No section below 60
- Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) General with a score of 7 (no section score below 6)
- Canadian Language Benchmark Tests with a score of 7 in each strand (not an average of 7)
- Duolingo English Test with a minimum score of 95
- Pearson PTE Academic with a minimum score of 46
- NACC Written Entrance Exam (passing score of 60)
- Evidence of successful completion of 2 consecutive years of full-time equivalent post-secondary study in English at a Canadian institution
- Evidence of successful completion of 2 consecutive years of full-time equivalent post-secondary study in English at an institution outside of Canada

Practicum Requirements
To be eligible for a placement, the student must:
- Achieve a minimum mark of 70% in each course with no evaluation method below 70%.
- Hold a Current Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer (Level C) CPR Certification
- Demonstrate a satisfactory attendance record by completing all 675 theory hours.
- Obtain a Clear Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector within 45 days of commencement of study.
- Submit a Medical Report within 45 days of commencement of study stating that the student is fit to complete all components of the program and has up-to-date immunization status.
- Clear Covid-19 test within one week of commencing practicum and/or other expectations in accordance with Public Health requirements.
Graduation Requirements
- Minimum mark of 70% in each Course with no evaluation method below 70%
- Completion of all 1000 program hours
- Current Standard First Aid and Level C CPR certification
- Successful completion of all Practicum Placement hours and Skills Requirements
- Successful completion of the NACC ECA Final Comprehensive Theory Examination (pass mark 65%)
- Resume and cover letter on file that the student intends to use for job search
Entry to Practice Requirements
- Negative Police Check, including vulnerable sector
- Up-to-date Immunization status
- Current Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer (Level C) CPR Certification
Graduates may be employed in child-care centres, day-care centres, kindergartens, agencies for exceptional children and other settings where early childhood education services are provided.
